Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production. It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.


Job Description


You will have the take on the responsibility of ensuring that Thungela assets are protected through developing a holistic governance framework for protection services that includes adherence to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, inclusion of community engagement principles and the continuous tracking and analysis of current and future risks to Thungela.

More of your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring adequate protection of Thungela assets against the risk of theft and fraud through advising management on asset and fraud protection and proactively managing any potential threat to employee and company assets.
  • Ensuring that the protection services strategy and associated policies and procedures are holistic in nature by including components of community engagement and alignment with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR).
  • Keeping abreast of new developments in the field of protection services including new technologies
  • Conducting security and public liability audits, as well as high risk audits ensuring adequate public liability cover for legal claims arising from death, illness or bodily injury to any person or damage to property belonging to someone else.
  • Ensure policies, procedures and administration requirements are developed, implemented and audited to make sure that it is being effectively followed by operational protection services personnel and contractors. These policies and procedures need to include contingency planning in the case of a security breach.
  • Managing outsourced protection services contracts
  • Be responsible for the delivery and management of an effective system of proactive threat detection and communication
  • Managing relationships with all key stakeholders (internal and external) to understand and deliver on their service needs and resolve issues optimally
  • Identify and undertake agreed projects that improve cost effectiveness and performance to reduce costs and drive higher quality in the service offering

Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Diploma /Degree in Security Management or related disciplines
  • Firearms and Ammunition Handling training competency certificate (Advantageous)

Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum 6-8 years’ experience in Protection Services
  • Must be registered with the Private Security Industry Registration Authority (PSIRA) and have a PSIRA Grade A designation
  • Experience in the Mining industry will be advantageous
  • Voluntary Principle for Security and Human Rights (VPSHR) Training
  • Valid Driver’s Licence

  • In depth knowledge of security technology and support systems
